(b Diciosânmartin [now Tîrnăveni], Romania, May 28, 1923). Hungarian composer. He studied at the conservatory in Kolozsvár (now Cluj-Napoca, Romania), 1941–3, and then at the Budapest Academy (1945–9), where he later taught while establishing himself as a composer. Partly for reasons of Soviet-bloc cultural policy, partly from Ligeti’s inevitable ignorance of much 20th-century music, his early works joined the Bartók tradition, though all the time he was writing other pieces of a more experimental character, not intended for public performance.
