He served most of his life in the secretary’s office of the East India Company, and wrote about two dozen theatrical pieces, tailoring his work particularly for the performers at Drury Lane. Although his dialogue lacked grace and his plots simplicity, his librettos exploited his professional knowledge of exotic locales such as India and Turkey, allowing Sheridan, the manager at Drury Lane, much scope for grand spectacle. ...
