As a boy he was subjected to oppressive discipline from his widowed father, a professional musician, who tried to turn him into a child prodigy. At the age of 16 he ran away from home. In Stargard (Pomerania), August Adler, a government official, impressed by the young man’s abilities, took him under his wing and furthered his education, sending him to Berlin to study with Carl Friedrich Zelter and Bernhard Klein.
