In 1841, having written four Italian operas with mixed success, Nicolai took up the post of Kapellmeister at the Vienna Hofoper, where he was expected to compose German opera. He seems to have searched continuously for a suitable libretto for a German opera, but was unable to find a subject that satisfied him. In the meantime he revised two of his Italian operas, ...
