(b Passaic, nj , Aug 2, 1932). American composer . He learned to play the piano as a child, then studied composition with Philip James at New York University (BA 1954) and with Otto Luening at Columbia University (MA 1956). Drawn almost immediately to the stage, he composed (and at once withdrew) his first opera while still an undergraduate. He subsequently wrote three successful one-act operas while working as a freelance music critic, on the strength of which he was awarded several Guggenheim and Prix de Rome fellowships and a Metropolitan Opera commission (the last is particularly noteworthy, since the Metropolitan performs, and commissions, very few American operas).
