Kayser, Sophie Amalia locked

  • Hans Joachim Marx

(b Darmstadt, Sept 25, 1711; d ?Brunswick, May 12, 1747). German soprano , daughter of the soprano Margaretha Susanna Kayser and the composer and violinist Johann Kayser (not to be confused with Reinhard Keiser’s daughter, Sophia Dorothea Louisa). She is thought to have made her début in Hamburg, with her mother, in Telemann’s Margaretha, Königin von Castilien (1730). In 1731 or 1732 she married the Italian violinist Giovanni Verocai, in Moscow, and seems to have followed him to St Petersburg in 1732. In 1735 she returned to Hamburg and in 1737 she became prima donna at the opera house of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. She played an important part, as an Italian-style soprano, in the rise of the opera under G. C. Schürmann.
