(b Tymoszówka, Ukraine, Oct 3, 1882; d Lausanne, March 29, 1937). Polish composer . He was a leading figure in Polish music in the first half of the 20th century.

Szymanowski was born into a family of prominent landowners in the Ukraine. He was introduced to music, literature and the fine arts at a very early age, since his home, described by the poet Iwaszkiewicz as ‘un palais enchanté’, was a centre for cultural events of every kind. Already in these early years at Tymoszówka he was composing sophisticated piano music indebted to Chopin and songs to texts by the ‘Young Poland’ poets. In ...
