In Haydn’s opera the nine characters of Lorenzi’s original libretto, L’infedeltà fedele (set by Cimarosa in 1779), are reduced to eight: the role of Viola, a peasant girl in love with Vuzzachio, is conflated with that of Nerina (Costanza Valdesturla, who also sang the role of Diana); Nerina is no longer the daughter of Melibeo (Antonio Pesci); and Vuzzachio’s name is changed to the loftier-sounding Lindoro (Leopold Dichtler).
