(b Keszthely, May 18, 1830; d Vienna, Jan 2, 1915). Hungarian composer . The son of a Jewish cantor and notary, Goldmark grew up in Németkeresztúr (now Deutschkreuz, Austria), near Ödenburg (now Sopron, Hungary). Although he never learnt to speak Hungarian, and stated in his memoirs that he considered himself to belong to the world of German culture, he retained a strong affection for his native land.
