Focusing exclusively on opera, the June 2009 update continues to enhance Grove coverage with new and revised articles on both operas and opera singers, drawn primarily from the Grove Book of Opera Singers.

New and revised articles

Featured are nearly 400 updated and revised biographies of opera singers including Enrico Caruso and Senesino. We have also added nearly 50 new biographies. While this content is easily accessible via search and browse, we’ve put the spotlight on a handful of notable additions:

Robin Blaze
Christine Brewer
Hanne Fischer
Barbara Frittoli
Paul Groves
Michael Schade
Sanford Sylvan

We are also pleased to introduce new articles on works from the Grove Book of Operas (2006):

Emmeline, by Tobias Picker
The Handmaid's Tale, by Poul Ruders
Sophie's Choice, by Nicholas Maw
The Death of Klinghoffer, by John Adams

Additions to Learning Resources

With this update we have added an index to opera roles, a new resource in the Tools and Resources area of Grove Music Online. The index is designed to allow you to browse major opera roles from A to Z with ease. Each entry also includes hyperlinks to the opera, composer, and singer.
