Following teenage success as a regional and national prize-winner on Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour talent show, he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1956 with the bachelor’s degree in Music, and commenced classes at the Juilliard School before entering military service. During his time in the Entertainment Forces of the Army in Korea (1956–8), Maiden performed concerts of Lieder, arias, spirituals, and Korean songs for troops and local audiences, and sang with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra under John S. Kim. After undertaking further classes at Juilliard in 1958, including with Sergius Kagen, Maiden was a vocal soloist in the 1959–60 tour of the Katherine Dunham Dance Company, and the following year toured the United States with the Harry Belafonte Folk Singers.
