(b London, Sept 2, 1936). English composer. He read music at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where his teachers included Patrick Hadley. The award of the Mendelssohn Scholarship in 1960 enabled him to study in East Berlin, at the Akademie der Künste, with Hanns Eisler. During this time he wrote his first acknowledged works, the Variations for Piano and the First String Quartet.
