(b Rouen, Dec 16, 1775; d Jarcy, Seine et Oise, Oct 8, 1834). French composer. He was the leading opera composer in France during the first quarter of the 19th century and remains the central figure in the opéra comique tradition.

The son of a clerk in the secretariat of the Rouen archdiocese, he received his earliest education from the Abbé Joseph-Jean-Pierre Baillemont, who was known by the townspeople for his profound knowledge of Virgil and for his enlightened approach to teaching Latin and French.
