(b Moscow, Dec 27, 1811/Jan 8, 1812; d St Petersburg, 10/Oct 22, 1869). Russian writer and critic. He is sometimes known under his pseudonym, Vasily Fortep′yanov. His brother Sergey Petrovich (1832–89) was a distinguished chemist and a pioneer in Russian medicine. Vasily was the oldest son of a family of tea merchants, and for some time directed the firm.
