Although he never held a position at the court of Louis XIV, his ability, reliability and productivity won him important posts in Paris and considerable renown. Overshadowed during his lifetime by his more strategically placed contemporary, Lully, and soon forgotten, it was only in the 20th century that he came to be acknowledged as one of the most gifted and versatile French composers....
