(b Brăila, Romania, April 10, 1860; Bucharest, Jan 10, 1939). Romanian soprano of international renown. After studying in Bucharest (with Le Kerre and George Stephanescu) and Galati (with George Cavadia) she continued her studies in Paris (1886–8) with Marie Sassa, Edmund Duvernois, and Jean Bayiste Faure. After her début in 1884 in Iasi, Hariclea made her début at the Grand Opera in Paris (8 December 1888). In 1890 she had a great success at La Scala in Massenet’s Le Cid, and was immediately booked by all the leading Italian theatres. Between 1893 and 1910 she appeared frequently in Moscow, St Petersburg, Lisbon, Barcelona, Madrid, and Buenos Aires, and in 1892 she performed the title role in Catalani’s La Wally at La Scala.
