The leading figure in Azerbaijani music after World War II, he studied the piano under Sharoyev at the Baku Music Technical School (1930–35) and then entered the Azerbaijan State Conservatory, where he was a pupil of Rudol′f (composition) and Hajibeyov (foundations of Azerbaijani folk music).
