(b Bucharest, Romania, 4/Feb 17, 1910; d Bucharest, May 9, 1966). Romanian composer, teacher, and conductor. He made his mark both as an exceptional teacher and as a prolific composer of wide culture, working in a great diversity of styles, forms, and genres. He comes from a family of musicians—his father was a violinist with the Bucharest Philharmonic orchestra and his mother was a pianist. He studied composition with F. Schmidt and Marx at the Vienna Music Academy (1927–31), where he was also a pupil of Wellesz and Lach in music history; at the same time he attended the philosophy faculty in Vienna (1928–31). He continued his composition studies under M. Jora at the Bucharest Conservatory (1931–2). After a period as a harmony teacher at the E. Massini Conservatory in Bucharest (1932–6), he directed that institution from 1936...
