(b Kalnujai, nr Raseiniai, Central Lithuania, Dec 20, 1888/Jan 1, 1889; d Vilnius, Feb 5, 1949). Lithuanian composer and conductor . He received his first music lessons from his father, a church organist. After preliminary studies in Rokiškis and Vilnius music schools he entered, in 1907, the St Petersburg Conservatory where he was taught by Vitohls, Lyadov and Steinberg. Having graduated in 1916, he was active in the cultural life of St Petersburg's Lithuanian community, conducting choirs and operettas, and accompanying singers. During the summer months he collected folk songs in Lithuania, settling in Vilnius as a music teacher in 1918. After short studies in Berlin with G.A. Schumann he moved to Kaunas (then Lithuania's capital) and became a prominent figure in the city's musical life. He taught at the J.
