(b Dessau, April 15, 1827; d Bonn, Nov 11, 1895). German conductor and composer. He was a pupil of F. Schneider at Dessau. In 1844 he entered the Leipzig Conservatory, then in the second year of its existence, and on leaving in 1846 settled at Düsseldorf. There he gradually advanced, taking the direction of the artists’ Liedertafel on Julius Rietz’s departure in 1847, and succeeding Schumann as conductor of the music society, temporarily in 1853 and permanently in 1855. He was associated with the direction of the Lower Rhine Festivals from 1853 to 1887. In the winter of 1878 he conducted the orchestral concerts at the Glasgow Festival. He retired to Bonn in 1890.
