(b Tolentino, March 15, 1790; d Pesaro, 5/Aug 6, 1848). Italian composer and singing teacher. Though he was born into a family of doctors, his first inclination was towards poetry; by the age of 17 he had written four verse tragedies in the style of Alfieri, one of which was performed by a professional company in Pesaro. Not until he left for Rome in 1807 to read law did he become aware of his true vocation: he began to take regular music lessons from Giuseppe Janacconi, later maestro di cappella of S Pietro, and by 1811 had been awarded the diploma di maestro of the Accademia di S Cecilia. He then went to Naples, where he studied dramatic composition with Paisiello, gaining his first practical experience by writing church music and insert arias for opera revivals in Neapolitan theatres.
