Perotinus [Perrotinus, Perotinus Magnus, Magister Perotinus, Pérotin]

(fl Paris, c1200). Composer of organa, conductus and, probably, motets. He was almost certainly active at the cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris, and was the most important of the musicians involved in the revision and updating of the Magnus liber organi attributed to Leoninus. His achievements are mentioned in two documents from the late 13th century, the treatises of Johannes de Garlandia (Hieromymus de Moravia's compilation) and Anonymus 4. No works are ascribed to Perotinus in musical sources, but Anonymus 4 mentions seven of his compositions, all of which can be identified in manuscripts of the 13th and 14th centuries with reasonable certainty.
