English family of musicians and court officials flourishing in the late 17th century and 18th century. (3) Henry Purcell (ii) used the arms of the Purcell family of Shropshire and Staffordshire, but the basis of his claim to them is uncertain. No members of the family appear to have held office at court before the Restoration, and none is known to have worked as a professional musician before the 1650s.
