(b Sydney, Jan 3, 1951). Australian composer and conductor. He studied at the universities of Sydney (B.Mus, 1973) and Adelaide (M.Mus, 1976), with Peter Sculthorpe and Bernard Rands (in Sydney) and Richard Meale (in Adelaide). He studied conducting with Georg Tintner (in Perth) and, with a study grant from the Australian Council for the Arts, he attended rehearsals conducted by Willem van Otterloo (in Sydney) and Hiroyuki Iwaki (in Melbourne). In 1974 he joined the Australian Opera as a repetiteur. In 1976 he was awarded an Albert H. Maggs Travelling Scholarship which enabled him to attend the Kompositionsstudio at the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt, to attend a conductor’s course with Michael Gielen at the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel and to participate in a master class with Peter Maxwell Davies at the Cantiere Internationale d’Arte at Montepulciano.
