(b Rocha, May 12, 1916). Uruguayan composer. She began her musical studies at the Conservatorio Teresiano in Rocha with Dolores Bell and Carmen Barrera; later she moved to Montevideo for advanced studies with Wilhelm Kolischer (piano), Tomás Mujica (counterpoint and fugue) and Enrique Casal-Chapí (composition). Her Cuatro miniaturas for violin and viola won a chamber music award at the GEDOK competition in Mannheim in 1966 (with Ernst Krenek, Werner Egk and Nadia Boulanger as the jurors); she also won several times (1959, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1978) the Casa de Teatro stage music award with incidental music for plays performed by the Comedia Nacional de Montevideo. Her chamber and vocal music reveals styles varying from contrapuntal techniques to a medieval troubadour-like character as well as 20th-century influences, mainly Hindemith. She has also written pedagogical works for children. She taught for many years at the Kolischer conservatory and at the Instituto de Enseñanza Musical....
