(b Iaşi, March 12, 1899; d Bucharest, Oct 10, 1986). Romanian composer. She studied music intermittently up to the age of 40 in Iaşi, Berlin, Paris and Vienna. She played the violin and the viola in the George Enescu Orchestra, Iaşi (1918–22), the Filarmonica Moldova, Iaşi (1942–4) and the Femina String Quartet, which she founded in 1944. She was also active as a singer, choral conductor and teacher of singing at the conservatories in Iaşi and Bucharest. She came into conflict with the communist authorities for several years and her activities were restricted for a time. She was later rehabilitated and concentrated her energies on the teaching of singing and composition. Her first composition was the song La lune blanche (1916, to a poem by Verlaine), and she followed this with over 100 works, including several for orchestra, of which the First Symphony (...
