(b Graz, Aug 4, 1968). Austrian composerAfter early piano lessons she began playing trumpet at the age of 7. When this was suddenly put to an end by an accident in 1983, she started to compose at a workshop led by Henze in Styria in 1984 (Jugendmusikfest Deutschlandsberg) and continued then to learn more about contemporary music from her uncle, the composer Gösta Neuwirth, in Berlin. At the same time she first encountered the writer Elfriede Jelinek, with whom she soon began to cooperate. Some of her early compositions were performed at the Styrian Autumn Festival in 1985. She studied at the San Francisco Conservatory (1986–7) with Elinor Armer and took courses in painting and the cinema at the San Francisco Art Institute. She continued her studies at the Vienna Hochschule für Musik (1987–93), where her teachers included Erich Urbanner, Dieter Kaufmann and Wilhelm Zobl, and in Paris with Tristan Murail and the Stage d’Informatique Musicale at IRCAM (...
