(b Marinette, WI, March 10, 1948). American musicologist. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley under Daniel Heartz and others, gaining the PhD in 1977 with a dissertation on music and drama. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania (1977–84), Stanford University (1984–9) and the University of Washington, Seattle. He is currently coordinator of the musicology programme in the Northwestern University School of Music. He has also been an Andrew Mellon Faculty Fellow at Harvard University.
