(b Bacău, January 28, 1931). Romanian composer. She studied composition at the Bucharest Conservatory (1949–56) under the guidance of Mihail Jora after the latter returned to teaching in 1953. She worked as a musical editor (1956–66) for the State Publishing House for Literature and the Arts (1956–58) and for the Musical Publishing House of the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists (URCM) (1958–1966). Felicia Donceanu’s work has many creative layers, from the dramatic to the lyrical, from the playful to the humorous. The modal imprint of her music is not far from some Romanian folk intonations. She privileges the voice, hence implicitly the poetic text, by focusing on specific genres (from vocal miniatures to vocal symphonic music) without excluding orchestral or dramatic genres. Children’s music, sometimes accompanied by the author’s lyrics and illustrations, has been another constant preoccupation. Aside from her work as a composer, Felicia Donceanu has also written texts for her own music and for that of other Romanian composers, as well as radio scripts and scripts for music and dance shows.
