Founded in London in 1952 by Harley Usill and Alex Herbage, it produced many outstanding recordings such as those by the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields under Neville Marriner, King’s College Choir, Cambridge, the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the Heinrich Schütz Choir under Roger Norrington. It also made many recordings of poetry, often read by the poets themselves, and a comprehensive recording of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets (on 137 LPs).
