- Magdalena Manolova
(b Sofia, July 30, 1948). Bulgarian composer and pianist. She graduated in 1972 from the Sofia State Academy of Music, where her teachers were Pancho Vladigerov (composition) and Bogomil Starshinov (piano). She returned to the Academy in 1980 as lecturer in jazz and popular music. As a pianist she performs both classical and light music. Her own compositions, many of which are chamber works, are very free and full of large-scale invention. They draw on such varied sources as Bulgarian classical and folk traditions, jazz, and contemporary classical music. A laconic sense of humour is particularly evident in her children’s musicals and in her film and television scores. Many of her later works concern contemporary issues of music theatre.
