Coghill, Rhoda (Sinclair)locked

  • Sarah M. Burn

Extract

(Sinclair)

(b Dublin, Oct 14, 1903; d 2000). Irish composer and pianist. One of Ireland’s finest pianists, she studied with Patricia Read in Dublin and with Artur Schnabel in Berlin, after gaining the MusB from Trinity College, Dublin. She followed a solo career in Ireland and was the official accompanist at Radio Eireann from 1939 for 30 years. Coghill’s style is quite distinct, particularly in her introspective, atmospheric songs. Her rhapsody Out of the cradle, endlessly rocking, one of the most outstanding Irish works to be written before World War II, shows that she was influenced by Debussy, especially in her use of colour and whole-tone harmony. A gifted poet, she published two collections of poems.
