- Magdalena Manolova
(b Sofia, Oct 1, 1933). Bulgarian composer . She studied at the Sofia Academy of Music where her teachers included her father, Asen Karastoyanov (composition), Zdravko Manolov (polyphony) and Lili Atanasova (piano). After her graduation in 1958, she was appointed lecturer in harmony and music analysis at the Sofia State School of Music. She was director of the Institute for Music and Choreography (1979–82) and later of the Sofia State School of Choreography (1983–8). Her music couples the spirit of traditional Bulgarian folk music as revealed in the first half of this century with the more modern aesthetic of the 1950s. She is the author of studies of Bach polyphony and Bulgarian folk music.
