(b Gdańsk, Sept 1, 1954). Polish composer. At the Warsaw Academy of Music she studied conducting with Ryszard Dudek (diploma with distinction, 1979) and composition with Marian Borkowski, graduating in 1982, and was later appointed lecturer in composition there. Her works have been performed at concerts and festivals of contemporary music in several European countries, the USA, Mexico and Cuba, and have been broadcast in the USA and France as well as in Poland. She has won many prizes for symphonic, chamber and solo works at composers’ competitions in Poland, including third prize for Elegy (for choir and orchestra) at the First Lutosławski International Composers’ Competition (1990). At the GEDOK competition in Mannheim (1989) she received a special mention for … Where Worlds are Naught… In her creative work, Kunkel strives for clarity of utterance and consistency in the development of her musical ideas, regardless of the complexity of the music....
