(b Glasgow, 24 May, year undisclosed). Scottish composer and pianist . She studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow and, after winning a scholarship, at the RCM (1957–8), where her interest in composition developed and she began to publish her work. Her pianistic abilities, her knowledge of Robert Burns’s poetry and a love of Scottish folksong come together in her many arrangements of Scottish songs. In The Kindling Fire (1974) Burns’s chosen melodies are supported by skilful and sensitive accompaniments which reveal a Ravel-like fondness for parallel chord movement, with occasional jazzy inflections. Among her many original songs are several song cycles, including Five Orkney Scenes (1975) and Orphead: a Spell for Rain (1978), to texts by George Mackay Brown; The Rhythm of Life (1985) for female voice and piano, to words by Alice Meynell; and Three Ballads...
