Norton [née Sheridan], Caroline Elizabeth Sarah

(b Huddersfield, March 22, 1808; d London, June 15, 1877). English poet and composer . She was a granddaughter of Richard Brinsley Sheridan , the statesman and dramatist, and Elizabeth Sheridan (née Linley), a celebrated English soprano; her elder sister was Helen Blackwood , Lady Dufferin, with whom she collaborated on an early publication entitled A Set of Ten Songs and Two Duets … by Two Sisters (London, 1833). In the 1840s, when most women composers chose to remain anonymous, she allowed the publication of her songs to reveal her identity, thus setting an example for other women to emulate. Her song Juanita (London, 1853) was the first drawing-room ballad by a woman composer to achieve substantial sales. Her stormy relationship with her husband, George Norton (d 1875), prompted her to write pamphlets and agitate on behalf of married women’s rights. Her poetry was admired, and one of her poems, ...
