- Kari Michelsen
(b Oslo, April 1, 1911). Norwegian composer and pianist. She studied the piano in Oslo and Berlin (début 1933, Oslo), and composition with Mark Lothar and Paul Höffer in Berlin, Nadia Boulanger in Paris and Hanns Jelinek in Vienna. Cecilie Dahm has said (Cappelens musikkleksikon) that Ørbeck’s songs are characterized by ‘a marked lyrical thread and a natural freshness which derives its effect from an independent and thoroughly prepared accompaniment’. Her music is tonal, and the early works show a strong Romantic influence. According to Dahm, this is most marked in the Symphony, her largest work, completed in 1944 (recorded in 1989).
