(b Puebla, Mexico, Sept 22, 1959). Mexican composer . She began her musical studies in Mexico City, then moved in 1979 to London, where she studied the flute and composition at the GSMD. She also participated in masterclasses with Peter Maxwell Davies and Harrison Birtwistle at Dartington Summer School. She returned to Mexico and became a university professor. Paredes has written dance, choral and orchestral music, as well as chamber music for various ensembles. In 1989 Covent Garden invited her to take part in the first Garden Venture project on new opera at Dartington; as a result she wrote her first chamber opera, La séptima semilla. lkal (Mayan for ‘human spirit, breath’) for solo recorder includes three main sections separated by distinctive transitions in which sounds of the voice and the recorder are blended. Recorders with different tunings are used to define different harmonic regions while historic temperaments are used as a reference to the past....
