(b Neuilly-sur-Seine, Dec 10, 1944). French composer and educationist. She studied law in Paris (1963–6) and, later, music at the Paris Conservatoire (1971–3) and computer music at IRCAM (1983). She concentrated at first on research into contemporary music teaching (Institut National de l’Audiovisuel, 1973–7; Centre Européen pour la Recherche Musicale de Metz, 1978–81; IRCAM, 1983) and is the author of several works in this field, notably Le geste musical (Paris, 1982). As a composer, she allots pride of place to the voice, which is treated as an instrument. Her electroacoustic music is mainly for the theatre, dance or film, yet in handling her chosen sound sources—instrumental, vocal, concrète—she avoids purely electronic colours. She has worked increasingly on the role of time, memory and silence in music. Renard was awarded prizes by the Villa Medici and the Fondation Beaumarchais in 1990...
