Schapira, Clairelocked

  • Daniel Kawka

(b Paris, Nov 7, 1946). French composer. She studied the theatre and then music (harpsichord and composition) and graduated in electroacoustics from the Schola Cantorum; she was resident at the Villa Medici from 1976 to 1978. Her output is small yet finely crafted. Formal rigour and an ever-present ‘directionality’ impart to her music a strong sense of dramatic tension, as in Acheminement (1980) and Chant cousu (1983), which are of a truly theatrical nature. Her style is further characterized by a pervasive use of polyrhythms (Rumeur, 1986) and dense sound textures resulting from the superposition of lines (La chaine, 1981 and A choeur perdu, 1986).
