(b San Antonio, TX, May 17, 1956). American composer . She was educated at North Texas State University, Denton (BM 1978), and the Manhattan School of Music (MM 1980), then undertook private study with Cathy Berberian (1980–81), at the Accademia Chigiana, Siena (1981–2), and at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Freiburg (1983). She later studied at the Juilliard School (1987–9), taking the DMA. Her composition teachers have included Ludmila Ulehla, Franco Donatoni, Bernard Rands and Brian Ferneyhough , to whom she was married, 1984–9. She has taught at various institutions in New York City since 1987. Her move to Europe in 1980 triggered in her an intense interest in the rigorous control of musical parameters; she ventures even further in Rauhreif/Frost (1987, first performed in Darmstadt, 1988), where groups of instruments rotate according to an autonomous design.
