(b Ciudad Guzmán, Jalisco, Aug 19, 1920; d Mexico City, Jan 22, 2005). Mexican composer . On graduating with the title profesora de piano from the Escuela Nacional de Música, Mexico City, with the intention of becoming a concert artist, she was hired by the Mexico City radio station XEQ. She there formed her own ensemble and broadcast her own songs. Bésame mucho (1941), with her own words, published in Mexico City when she was 21 and reissued in New York in 1943, became a best seller in the USA for Jimmy Dorsey and his orchestra in 1944; it was a great hit with North American servicemen fighting in Asia and Europe during World War II.
