(b Geneva, c 1640; d after 1685). Swiss composer . She was blind from before the age of one, the result of an accident. Her father taught her to read with a wooden alphabet; she mastered Latin, French and German as well as mathematics, philosophy and theology. She also took up music, in Hawkins’s words, ‘as a relief to her severer studies’, singing, playing the harpsichord and composing. However, according to Hawkins, none of her music survives....
