Wilkins, Margaret Lucylocked

  • Marie Fitzpatrick

(b Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, Nov 13, 1939). English composer. She studied music at Trinity College of Music, London, and at the University of Nottingham (1957–60). In 1976 she was appointed as a senior lecturer at the Huddersfield Polytechnic (now University of Huddersfield). She performed with the Scottish Early Music Consort, 1969–76, and became director of the contemporary music group Polyphonia in 1989. In 1970 performances of Dieux est, Concerto grosso and Music for an Exhibition attracted notable interest, and her compositions have been presented regularly in Britain and abroad since that time. In addition to orchestral and chamber works, she has written multi-media compositions, including Kanal, chosen for performance at the ISCM Festival in Poland in 1992. Her music is characterized by its attention to texture and by its keen sense of drama.
