(b Brisbane, Oct 23, 1961). Australian composer and viola player. He studied viola in his home town before moving to Berlin in 1984. There he became a member of the Berlin PO, in which he played from 1985–2000. As a composer, Dean was almost entirely autodidact, except for a study of 20th-century compositional techniques that he took as part of his Bachelor of Music training. He started composing in 1988, at first in collaboration with Simon Hunt, with whom he worked on some half-improvised soundtracks for experimental films. Dean’s first original composition was a piece for five violas with the significant title Turning Points (Wendezeit), which he recorded by multi-tracking but performed only much later. The first piece of his to be performed publicly was some birthday... for two violas and cello. Given its première in May 1992, it signalled Dean’s emergence as a composer. Night Window (...
