( b Lynn, MA, 1954). American baritone . He studied at the New England Conservatory and made his professional début with the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1974. Since 1981 he has collaborated regularly with director Peter Sellars, beginning with roles in typically provocative productions of operas by Handel, Joseph Haydn and Mozart (Count Almaviva in Figaro, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte). Maddalena first achieved international success with his powerful portrayal of Richard Nixon in the 1987 première of John Adams’s Nixon in China at the Houston Grand Opera. He subsequently repeated the role at the Netherlands Opera, the Edinburgh Festival, the Washington Opera, the Frankfurt Opera, at the Adelaide Festival, in Paris and elsewhere, and also recorded it. His other premières include the Captain in Adams’s The Death of Klinghoffer at La Monnaie (1991), Hobson in David Carlson’s The Midnight Angel in St Louis (1993), Elliot Goldenthal’s Vietnam oratorio ...
