( b South Shields, 1955). English mezzo-soprano . She studied at the GSMD with Laura Sarti and at the National Opera Studio, and made her professional début as Mistress Quickly for Glyndebourne Touring Opera. In 1985 she joined ENO, with whom she has sung many roles, including Anežka (Smetana’s The Two Widows), Marfa (Khovanshchina), Jezibaba (Rusalka) and Berthe in Weir’s Blond Eckbert. Among her many other roles are Brangäne (which she has sung for WNO and La Monnaie), Verdi’s Mistress Quickly (at WNO and the Komische Oper, Berlin), Amneris and Azucena, Venus (Tannhäuser), Mrs Grose in The Turn of the Screw (Glyndebourne), and Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana. Her rich, dark-toned mezzo has also been admired as Morozova in Tchaikovsky’s Oprichnik in Cagliari, Madelon in Andrea Chénier for Scottish Opera, Ragonde (Le Comte Ory) for Garsington Opera, the Witch (Hänsel und Gretel...
