( b New York, Dec 19, 1953). American bass-baritone . He studied at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music and subsequently with Phyllis Curtin at the Tanglewood Music Center summer workshops. His major début was at the New England Bach Festival in 1980, since when he has appeared in recitals with pianist David Breitman throughout the USA (including Carnegie Hall) and in Europe (including the Wigmore Hall). He is also a noted oratorio singer, especially in Bach. In opera he has been been especially acclaimed as Mozart’s Figaro and Don Alfonso, and as Leporello, a role he has sung at Glyndebourne (1994) and at the New York City Opera. In 2004 he sang his first Wotan in Die Walküre, in an abridged New York production by Christopher Alden, and in 2005 he made his Glimmerglass Opera début, as Don Alfonso.
