Varna Philharmonic Orchestra

Bulgarian orchestra. Founded in 1913 as an amateur symphony orchestra. It participated with great success in the first Summer Music Celebrations (later Varna International Summer Music Festival) in Varna (1926) under Assen Naydenov. In 1946 on the initiative of the conductor and violinist Sasha Popov it was renamed the Varna State Symphony Orchestra, which in 1968 grew into a State Philharmonic. The conductors Ruslan Raitchev, Vassil Stefanov, Yosko Yosifov, and Konstantin Iliev all substantially contributed to the orchestra’s reputation, while conductors Emil Glavanakov, Ivan Marinov, and Yordan Dafov were instrumental in the orchestra’s professional growth.
The orchestra has an extensive repertory including symphonic music, cantatas, oratorios, and many compositions from different generations of Bulgarian composers. It has participated in all of the prestigious Bulgarian festivals and has toured throughout Europe.
