According to historians, a city inhabited since antiquity near today’s Prizren was known as Theranda in the 2nd century ad. The present-day city of Prizren is situated in the southern part of Rrafshi i Dukagjinit, which used to connect the northern coast of the Albanian lands and their trade centres with the internal regions of Kosovo and the Balkans. Prizren shares borders with Albania and Macedonia and is estimated to have approximately 170,000 inhabitants. It is considered to be the oldest city in South-Eastern Europe, and even in antiquity Prizren was known for its position near the Lissus-Naissus (Shkodra-Prizren) road that was of particular importance until the 20th century (Berisha, 1994, 6).
The beginnings of art music in Kosovo are found in Prizren, in the church of Saint Cecilia, which from 1887 to 1892 played a special role in development of cultural life in Kosovo. The church had its own choir for the liturgy but it allowed the choir to cultivate non-church music outside of its internal environment; i.e. in the church’s garden. For the church itself this was significant as an inevitable need in church celebrations and as part of its church rituals.
